Indonesian bauxite price goes up

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Mar 12 – Pushed up by the news that Indonesia will stop bauxite policy from this May, many Indonesia bauxite suppliers raised offers slightly. Asian Metal learnt that the director from the Industrial Department of Indonesia suggested imposing tax on bauxite export by 25% and 50% gradually and stop export in 2014.
A bauxite supplier from Indonesia revealed that they now offer USD33-37/t FOB Indonesia for bauxite Al 48-49%, Si 4-5%, but may increase the offer to USD45/t FOB Indonesia late April. “In spite of the suggestion of the industrial director, the mining director did not declare the final policy,” said the source, who indicated that Indonesia may implement the policy declared before.
However, the source noted that Indonesia president and Mining director would visit China and meet Chairman Hu Jintao late March, so the policy will be clear late this month.
The bauxite supplier exports around 500,000t of bauxite to China each month.
A trader from Hong Kong confirmed that the bauxite price rose by USD3/t to USD30/t FOB Indonesia for bauxite Al 47-48% Si 8-10%. “The rising price is mainly due to the export ban policy and some suppliers would like to take the chance to raise price,” said the source.
The trader worried that Chinese bauxite consumers may not accept the rising price. “The bauxite grade kept declining, which increased the production cost of Chinese alumina producers,” said the source.
