China-Indonesia Nickel Corridor handles over 90,000t in six months

A Panama-flagged cargo ship, KANG SHUN 99, recently arrived at Yangluo Port in Wuhan, carrying about 7,969 tonnes of key raw materials from Sulawesi, Indonesia, for Chinese battery materials company GEM Co., Ltd. This shipment is part of a dedicated shipping route, known as the "Nickel Corridor", connecting Indonesia's Labota Port with Wuhan, set up to support GEM's operations in Indonesia.
In the first half of 2025, the corridor has completed 34 vessel trips, with a total cargo volume of about 94,811 tonnes.
GEM's Indonesian plant is expected to produce up to 1 million tonnes of MHP (mixed hydroxide precipitate) each year. This nickel-rich intermediate material is shipped to China, where it is refined into high-purity nickel and cobalt sheet products used in batteries for electric vehicles.
