China has unveiled a groundbreaking precision denitration technology for magnesium smelting, marking a world-first in the industry
Jointly developed by Yulin Zhongke Clean Energy Innovation Research Institute, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shaanxi Zhonghuan Carbon Energy Technology Co., Ltd . , this new system replaces traditional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a two-stage denitration process, eliminating reliance on traditional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) methods . This new approach offers a complete, cost-effective, and high-efficiency denitration solution for the industry, providing benefits such as reducing equipment investment by over 70% and operating costs by more than 80%; achieving a 70% reduction in NOx emissions, with an annual reduction of approximately 10,000 tons, equivalent to reforesting around 20 square kilometers; etc.
Fugu County is the world's largest magnesium production base, with extensive operations in magnesium alloy smelting and processing. Its products are exported to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and other regions . In 2024, Fugu's annual magnesium production reached 537,200 tonnes, accounting for 52 . 35% of China's total output and 47 . 54% of global production.
The new precision denitration technology provides a green solution for Yulin City's magnesium smelting industry, promoting sustainable development. Currently, the technology has been successfully implemented at Yufeng Magnesium Alloy Co . , Ltd . in Fugu, where it has been operating stably for over four months . It meets all emission standards and can co-treat up to 20 tonnes of ammonia-containing wastewater daily, achieving a win-win outcome for both economic and environmental benefits.
