Hefei seeks opinion on development of advanced magnesium materials industry

On February 13, an exposure draft for the development plan of advanced magnesium materials industry in Hefei, China was released by the Hefei Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology to seek public opinions.
According to the exposure draft, the city aims to realize a total output value of 20 billion yuan (2.76 billion U.S. dollars) from advanced magnesium materials industry by 2027 and further expand the industrial scale to over 50 billion yuan (6.9 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030, attracting more than 150 companies, and establish one of China's leading industrial clusters for advanced magnesium materials.
In terms of functionality, the plan includes hydrogen storage materials and equipment, aerospace applications, and long-term strategies for medical equipment, humanoid robots, agricultural magnesium hydrogen fertilizers, and magnesium secondary batteries. Additionally, efforts will be made to expand the use of magnesium alloy extrusion technology in fields such as consumer electronics, aerospace, and humanoid robots. There is also a strong focus on broadening the application of magnesium alloy semi-solid forming technology in industries like automotive and electric bicycles. Furthermore, an industry fund will be established to support the development of magnesium-based advanced materials.
China's Anhui has a planned production capacity of 400,000tpa of primary magnesium, including 300,000tpa in Chizhou and 100,000tpa in Hefei, and 500,000tpa of magnesium alloy, including 300,000tpa in Chizhou and 200,000tpa in Hefei. In 2023, Hefei produced 101,000t of magnesium alloy, accounting for 29.3% of China's total annual production, making it the biggest magnesium alloy production base in the world.
