AM Statistics: Operating rate of Chinese main copper rod plants in July down by 6% MOM

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 5 Aug 14 - According to figures from Asian Metal, the average operating rate of main copper rod plants in China was around 65% in July, down by 6% month-on-month.
The Asian Metal survey into production in 24 copper rod plants in China showed that total production with the annual capacity of 6.40 million tons was 346,500t in July, down by 3% month-on-month. Among the 24 copper rod producers, there are 11 large-sized producers with the annual capacity of above or equal to 300,000t each, and the total capacity is 4.11 million tons; there are 12 mid-sized producers with capacity at 100,000-300,000tpy for each and 2.21 million tons in total; there is one producer with the capacity of 80,000tpy. The operating rates in different regions are shown below in form:
In July, copper prices in China fluctuated at around RMB50,000-52,500/t (USD8,117-8,523/t), and buyers were hesitant to accept the high level. Meanwhile, it was the traditional off-season for copper rod consumption, and demand continued to weaken, especially from electric wire and cable producers. Moreover, many end-users still faced high pressure of capital turnover. As a result, the operating rate slid last month.
In August, copper rod consumption would continue to decrease. Moreover, some new expansion projects of copper rod come on stream in August, and the low production may drag down the average operating rate of main copper rod plants in China. Therefore, the operating rate of main copper rod producers in China may fall further this month.
